Vancouver's Nano One benefits from Tesla's lithium battery demand

Nano One CEO Dan Blondal says there’s a rapidly growing market and pent-up demand for lithium-battery cathode materials. HANDOUT/NANO ONE MATERIAL CORP. / PNG

The meteoric rise of electric-car manufacturer Tesla has increased the demand for lithium batteries and the components that go into them, and a Vancouver materials technology company hopes to grab a share of the business.

Nano One Materials Corp. has developed a new method of making cathode material, a black, powdery substance used in lithium batteries. Nano One is building a $6-million plant to test its ability to produce the substance in commercial quantities in a production line-type setting.

“We are at the stage where we’ve proven the technology at a certain level,” said Nano One CEO Dan Blondal, who founded the company in 2011. “We’ve tested the material and gotten the performance we expected, as well as proving to ourselves that the technology scales. … What we want is learn (with the pilot plant) is whether it’s a platform that will give a manufacturer the ability to make the material for any kind of battery, going into a number of applications.”

The Nano One technology, Blondal said, creates cathode materials that could last up to three times longer in a battery than current materials. That would allow batteries to store more energy while trimming the cost of producing hem.

Blondal said Nano One’s process has generated wide interest including from battery makers and the companies that use batteries in everything from tiny phones to large cars..

Could a lithium shortage de-rail the electric car boom?

We've gone electric, and there's no going back at this point. Lithium is our new fuel, but like fossil fuels, the reserves we're currently tapping into are finite—and that's what investors can take to the bank..

Nano One Materials: Neue Verarbeitungstechnologie für Kathoden in Lithium-Ionen-Batterien

Hierzu ein informativer Bericht von InvestorIntel:

Petersen on a novel processing technology for lithium-ion battery cathodes

Posted on June 2016 by John Petersen

Nano One Materials Corp. (TSXV: NNO) is developing a novel, scalable, low cost processing technology for the mixed metal oxide powders used in lithium-ion battery cathodes. Nano One’s processing technology has been successfully demonstrated in laboratory scale testing with batch sizes of several hundred grams. It is currently building a pilot-scale version (batch sizes of up to 10 kg) of a planned commercial-scale processing facility to prove its commercialization path. After spending a couple hours on the phone with Nano One’s officers last week, I think their patented cathode powder manufacturing process may be a game-changer that could become an industry standard because:
  • It uses standard metallurgical and industrial equipment with no “black boxes;”
  • It has the potential to reduce cathode cost per kWh by up to 50% using a simpler process that can accommodate lower purity feedstocks (99% vs 99.9% or 99.99%);
  • The superior homogeneity and crystalline structure of the finished cathode powders significantly improves battery performance and cycle-life;
  • It can be used for most common cathode chemistries and two proprietary chemistries;
  • It provides direct access to crucial process technology for developers of lithium-ion battery gigafactories that need to vertically integrate their supply chains; and
  • It has significant potential in other important industries.

Nano One is pursuing a “platform technology” business model where it will develop its process through the pilot phase and then negotiate licenses, joint ventures and other commercialization relationships. After giving effect to estimated Q2 losses of $650,000 (CDN) and recent warrant exercise and private financing transactions that went off at an average price of $0.30 (CDN), Nano One has 57.6 million shares outstanding, $4 million (CDN) in stockholders’ equity and a $4 million (CDN) war chest. Its financial resources should be sufficient to build the pilot plant and get a good start on the customer testing and validation process. Based on Nano One’s current stock price of $0.53 (CDN), a market cap of $30.6 million (CDN) does not strike me as unreasonable.

Morgan Stanley: Battery storage to grow four times quicker than market thinks

By Giles Parkinson on 20 June 2016

Leading investment bank Morgan Stanley believes the Australian energy market is seriously underestimating the grow of solar and battery storage, and says the technology will be installed at rates four times quicker than the incumbent energy industry expects.

In a new detailed report, Asia Insight: Solar and batteries, Morgan Stanley expects the market for battery storage to grow from about 2,000 Australian homes now to one million by 2020. But its “high case” suggests the take-up could be double that – up to 2 million homes by 2020

Nano One Completes Engineering Study and Launches Pilot

Vancouver, BC: Dan Blondal, CEO of Nano One Materials Corp., today provided an update on the progress of its lithium battery materials pilot plant.

We are pleased to report that the design phase of our pilot plant was completed on schedule and budget at the end of May.” said Mr. Blondal. “We initiated the procurement and construction phase on June 1 and are on track to have the pilot built early in 2017. The goal of the pilot is to simulate full scale production of lithium ion cathode materials and demonstrate the cost, scalability, performance and novelty of Nano One’s technology to strategic industry players.”

The pilot plant will be used to showcase Nano One’s patented technology and demonstrate cost, scalability and performance to third party strategic interests. It is designed with flexibility to demonstrate a variety of processing concepts and chemistries, enabling Nano One to adapt to market needs and produce a range of products, including Nano One’s recently announced high voltage, cobalt free battery material. The pilot will be capable of producing ten (10) kilogram batches of various lithium mixed metal cathode materials that are strategically important to electric vehicle, grid storage and consumer electronic batteries.

Lithium-Konferenz in Las Vegas

Hierzu ein aktueller Bericht von Chris Berry:

Lithium in Las Vegas: A Closer Look at the Lithium Bull

May 31, 20161 Comment

I'm just back and recovering from a week in Las Vegas where the 8th Annual Lithium Supply and Markets Conference hosted by Metal Bulletin took place. Sentiment in the industry is overwhelmingly positive as the ubiquity of technology and the cost deflation associated with that technology (EVs, consumer electronics) means that lithium ion battery chemistry will remain central to this growth.

The event was attended by major lithium producers including Albemarle (ALB:NYSE), SQM (SQM:NYSE), and FMC (FMC:NYSE), cathode manufacturers, investment professionals, and junior mining companies, so coming away with a clear view of the market was facilitated.

It looks like my demand estimates of ~270,000 tonnes LCE by 2020 will be met. Supply, on the other hand, is always a wild card in the mining sector and my proprietary estimates..
