Gold Volatility Continues as Investors Eye End of Year Fed Meeting

Highlights:
  • Gold and gold equities continued their volatile run this week as investors adjusted to last week’s decision by the Federal Reserve to not raise interest rates, but keeping the door open for a rate hike before the end of the year. Since mid-August, the price of gold has fluctuated, rising as high as $1,351 per ounce on September 6 to as low as $1,305 per ounce on August 31st. Gold equities have followed suit, with the S&P/TSX Global Gold Index rising and falling twice between 230 and 250 in September. Gold ETF’s, including SPDR Gold Shares (GLD-NYSEARCA), also fell this week. It appears likely that this volatility will persist at least until the end of the year given the impending U.S. election in November and the possibility of a rate rise in November or December, and the question remains will gold remain above the $1,300 per ounce level. Gold (↓1.5%), along with silver (↓2.6%)  and platinum (↓2.6%), were down this week, finishing at $1,317, $19.19 and $1,028 per ounce respectively.  Palladium bucked the trend, finishing higher (↑2.6) at $721 per ounce. Base metals were mixed this week; copper continued to defy sceptical investors and was up slightly to finish at $2.21 per pound, nickel fell 1% to finish at $4.78 per pound, while both lead (↑10%) and zinc (↑5%) finished strongly this week, closing at $0.96 and $1.08 per pound respectively. The price of WTI crude rallied this week after news that OPEC agreed to limit supply to support low prices. This comes as Iraq boosted exports and Libya reopened some of its main terminals. WTI crude finished at $48 per barrel on Friday. Finally, the UxC Weekly Spot Price of uranium fell further (↓7.2%), finishing at $22.38 per pound on Friday.

Produktionsvolumen) Barrick Gold (ABX)..

Newmont's aggressive expansion plans

Newmont Mining is on an aggressive investment (and divestment) program which could see it catapult the company to the top of gold production stakes.

In a presentation at the Gold Forum in the city, Denver-based Newmont outlined projects that will add around 1 million ounces of gold to its portfolio and do so as soon as the middle of next year..

Große Goldproduzenten fokussieren sich auf aktive Minenbezirke und Junior-Firmen

Hierzu ein aktueller Bericht von Reuters:

World's gold miners stick close to home in hunt for more metal

By Susan Taylor and Nicole Mordant | TORONTO/DENVER

The world's biggest gold miners are taking a cautious approach in their hunt for bullion, spending more money to explore around existing mines rather than new territory in a strategy that may have short-term gains but risks future production growth.

Top producers are relying more than ever on small companies to do the heavy lifting of searching for new deposits and increasingly taking 10 to 20 percent equity stakes in the junior miners.

Exploring close to home is more cost efficient and improves the odds of discoveries. But the chances of making major new finds are limited, diminishing global gold output, which is expected to decline by nearly 9 percent in the next three years.

"It only makes sense to be looking in your own backyard first before exploring elsewhere," said Paul Rollinson, Chief Executive of Kinross Gold, which spends about 90 percent of its exploration budget around existing sites.

"We focus on areas we already know, with existing infrastructure nearby, in jurisdictions we are comfortable with."

The world's 10 biggest gold miners are bumping up the share of exploration budgets earmarked for land around existing mines, or brownfield exploration, increasing the spending to 56 percent in 2015 from 45 percent in 2013..

Big Picture, Goldminen: Ressourcen-Bewertungen bei M&A Deals (2006-2015)

Lower than Expected U.S. Jobs Data Spurs Late-Week Gold Rally

§  The price of gold and gold-related equities continued to fall early in the week, with the yellow metal falling towards the $1,300 level as the possibility of an earlier-than-expected rate hike in 2016 appeared more likely. This speculation was supported by positive macroeconomic data earlier in the week, with jobs data in particular suggesting employment in the U.S. continued to be robust. The gold price fell as low as 1,305 per ounce during intra-day trading on Wednesday as investors exited the gold space. However, after a rally on Thursday which saw some of these losses recouped, non-farm payroll data for August came in lower than expected; rising by 151,000 jobs last month after an upwardly revised 275,000 increase in July. This was well short if the 180,000 new jobs predicted by economists. August traditionally has been a difficult month for jobs numbers, and 2016 proved no exception, likely putting the Federal Reserve on hold for a rate hike anytime soon. Gold finished at $1,328 on Friday, while silver was up (4%) after an early week fall, finishing at 19.52 per ounce. Platinum (↓1%) and palladium (↓1.4%) were both lower, finishing at $1,064 and $680 per ounce respectively. Base metals were up this week, with copper (0.3%), nickel (2.5%), lead (3.6%) and zinc (2.05%) each finishing at $2.09, $4.54, $0.88 and $1.07 per pound respectively. The price of WTI crude fell heavily early in the week before regaining some of those losses on Friday to finish at $44.20 per barrel.

Markets Jitter as Investors Prepare for Possible End-Of-Year Rate Rise

§  Today, Fed Chair Janet Yellen stated that the case for raising U.S. interest rates had strengthened in recent months because of improvements in the labour market and expectations for moderate economic growth. The Fed last raised rates in December last year, its first hike in nearly a decade, but has since held off further increases due to a global growth slowdown, financial market volatility and generally tepid U.S. inflation data. With an election looming, most commentators see a raise in September as unlikely; instead December looms as the month for a possible rate hike reflecting last year’s rise in December. However, the Fed again reiterated its position that if rates are raised, they will be done so gradually. As expected, markets were jittery on the news, having fallen during the week as bullish employment data heightened expectations of a positive economic outlook from the Fed; on Tuesday, the S&P/TSX Composite Index fell over one hundred points before stabilizing at 14,639 at close. Investors in gold and gold mining equities appeared to have anticipated the Fed’s tone, with gold falling 1.5% during the week, and finishing at $1.320 per ounce on Friday; silver (↓3.4%), platinum (↓3.9%)  and palladium (↓3.2%)  also fell, finishing at $18.61, $1,071 and $685 per ounce. Base metals followed a similar trend, with copper (↓4%) and nickel (↓5.6%) both finishing lower at $2.06 and $4.43 per pound; lead was down slightly (↓0.3%) while zinc bucked the trend, finishing higher at $1.05 per pound. WTI crude prices had a volatile week after inventories rose before finishing lower at $47.33 per barrel.

Gold in Search of Direction Friday After Rapidly Shedding Early Gains at Mid-day

§  Major indices retreated Friday after many set new highs just a day earlier.  The pullback was on the tail of soft U.S. Retail Sales and Producer Price Index (PPI) data points early Friday.  There was an immediate ~$15/oz jump in December Gold futures pre-market, which more or less held up until about noon (PST), when gold retreated ~12/oz in about 20 minutes.  The initial run in gold seemed to be on the back of this economic data that came in below expectations, which could mean slower inflation than anticipated is occurring, potentially pushing back the threat of an interest rate hike. Meanwhile oil posted one of its strongest weekly gains in some time after shedding more than $10/barrel from early June highs of more than $50/barrel to early August lows of sub $40/barrel.  To end the week, Gold and Silver were unchanged at $1,336 (↑0.02%),$19.71 (0%), with platinum and palladium finishing lower at $1,122 (↓2.16%) and $685 (↓1.58%) per ounce respectively. Base metals were mixed; nickel (↓4.05%), zinc (↓1.42%) and copper (↓0.64%) finished lower at $4.65, $1.01 and $2.15 respectively, while lead (↑2.86%) finished higher at $0.83 per pound. The WTI crude price gained 6.38%, while the UxC Broker Average Price of uranium was down (↑0.96%) closing at $26.00 per pound on Friday.
