The personal fortune of Andrew Mackenzie, the CEO of BHP Billiton, has suffered along with the rest of the mining industry.
His annual pay for 2016 was cut in half to $US2.24 million ($A2.97 million) as the world’s biggest miner posted record losses and cut dividends by three-quarters in a low commodity price world..

Record Loss For Petrobras As Political And Economic Crisis Worsen
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 03/23/2016 15:20 -0400
Petrobras reported a record loss for the fourth quarter, a horrendous performance that raises questions about the company’s ability to handle its mountain of debt.
The state-owned Brazilian oil company announced that it lost more than 36 billion reais in the fourth quarter, or more than USD$10 billion, a 40 percent increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2014. The losses were all the more staggering because the previous year’s figures were inflated due to the massive corruption scandal, which continues to bedevil the company.
The problem for Petrobras is that it has the world’s largest pile of debt, bigger than any other oil company. And that debt, much of which is priced in U.S. dollars, is becoming more expensive to service, particularly since the Brazilian real has depreciated significantly over the past year. As The Wall Street Journal notes, Petrobras’ debt has jumped to just about 800 billion reais, or about 10 percent higher than at the end of 2015, despite spending cuts..

Brazil tailings dam spill much smaller than original estimates
Brazil tailings dam spill much smaller than original estimates
Frik Els | January 8, 2016
According to the latest satellite assessment by Samarco of a tailings dam burst at its Brazilian iron ore mine that devastated the country's second largest river system, the Rio Doce, the tailing waste spill was much smaller than previously determined.
BHP Billiton, which jointly owns Samarco with Vale, said in its 60-day update since the November 5 incident, the volume of tailings material released when two dams were breached was about 32m cubic metres. Initial estimates were put as high as 60m cubic metres.
Samarco also found that approximately 85% of the released tailings were retained within 85 kilometres of the Fundão dam. Samarco is undertaking several activities to stabilize the released tailings and to prevent more material from entering the river system, including constructing dikes to contain tailings and revegetation along the Gualaxo and Doce rivers.
Work to repair and reinforce the Selinha dike above the Fundão dam in the Germano complex is complete according to the statement while the company is continuing to reinforce the Santarém water dam which overflowed, but which retained some of the tailings from Fundão.
The Brazilian government announced a $5 billion civil damages lawsuit last year, but warned that "the figure is preliminary and could be raised over the judicial process, since the environmental damages of the mud’s arrival at the ocean have not yet been calculated."
The disaster in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state that killed at least 17 people and left hundreds homeless, caused sludge to wash downstream into neighbouring state Espírito Santo through remote mountain valleys reaching the Atlantic ocean 600 kilometres away..

Wegen Samarco-Minenunglück in Brasilien: Eisenerzgigant Vale kürzt Produktionsausblick
Vale cuts iron ore forecast, as dam burst adds to low margin cutbacks
Vale cuts iron ore forecast, as dam burst adds to low margin cutbacks
- Vale (NYSE:VALE) lowers its iron ore production forecast for next year to 340M-350M metric tons, compared with earlier guidance of 376M tons.
- The likelihood of missing guidance was flagged in July as slumping metal prices prompted efforts to lift average ore quality; since then are new reductions related to the dam collapse at its Samarco joint venture with BHP Billiton that halted output and damaged infrastructure used by another Vale mine.
- Vale, which is hosting its annual investor day event at the NYSE today, expects to produce 340M tons of iron ore this year.

Brazil's federal government and two states are suing Samarco, an iron ore miner jointly owned by BHP Billiton and Vale, for $5.3 billion over a catastrophic tailings dam burst that devastated the country's second largest river system, the Rio Doce.
The government attorney general announced the 20 billion real civil damages lawsuit late on Friday, but warned that "the figure is preliminary and could be raised over the judicial process, since the environmental damages of the mud’s arrival at the ocean have not yet been calculated."
The November 5 disaster that killed at least 15 people caused 60 million cubic metres of mine waste from the site in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state to wash downstream into neighbouring state Espírito Santo through remote mountain valleys reaching the Atlantic ocean 600 kilometres awayearlier this week.
Toxic materials, including arsenic, and high levels of lead, aluminum, chromium, nickel and cadmium, were found in the waters of the Rio Doce by a United Nations team and confirmed by Vale on Friday.
Vale and BHP also on Friday announced the establishment of a fund of undisclosed size to help restore the environment. Brazil's environmental watchdog earlier levied a 250 million real ($65 million) fine on Samarco.

BHP Billiton, Vale: Two dozen missing in vast mudflow of Brazil mine disaster
Die jüngsten Kommentare zur Minen-Katastrophe in Brasilien:
Two dozen missing in vast mudflow of Brazil mine disaster
MARIANA, Brazil, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Rescue teams on Saturday struggled to reach villages devastated by a massive mudflow after two dams burst at a major Brazilian mine, wreaking havoc more than 80 km (50 miles) downstream and prompting officials to warn of a higher death toll.
A dozen residents of nearby villages remain missing, along with 13 workers from the mine, but only one death has been confirmed in what the governor of mineral-rich Minas Gerais described as the state's worst environmental disaster.
"The death toll will rise for sure ... The number of missing will rise because we're talking to the residents of Bento (Rodrigues) and some people still aren't accounted for," Duarte Júnior, mayor of the nearby city of Mariana, told reporters.
City officials released a partial list of missing people, including three children, ages 4 to 7, and a 60-year-old woman from the village, which was swamped by mudslides within a half hour of public warnings.
The mine's operator, Samarco, is co-owned by the world's largest mining company BHP Billiton Ltd and the biggest iron ore miner Vale SA . Clean-up and repairs along miles of flooded river could cost the companies a fortune..
