Wochenrückblick: Kupferaktien erholen sich, Goldminen schwach

Geteiltes Bild am Rohstoffmarkt in der Vorwoche. Es gab ein paar Gewinner und viele Verlierer.

Von der Erholung im amerikanischen Leitkapitalmarkt profitierten die Lithium- und Batterie-technologieaktien (LIT) und die Kupferwerte (COPX), die im Rohstoffsektor zu den stärksten Titeln in der vergangenen Handelswoche zählten. Nach dem Ausverkauf im dunkelroten November-Monat kam es auch zu einer Erholung bei den Energieaktien (XLE). Der WTI-Ölpreis verzeichnete mit einem Minus von rund 23% den schlechtesten Monat seit 2008.

Abgaben auf breiter Front mussten in den letzten Tagen erneut die Gold- und Silberminen hinnehmen. Die Edelmetall-Minen-ETFs (GDX, GDXJ, SIL) nähern sich wieder den Jahrestiefständen an. Hier wirken sich die typischen Effekte der „Tax-Loss-Selling“ Periode dieses Jahr wieder besonders negativ aus. Schwach zeigten sich auch die Cannabiswerte (HMMJ), die auf Wochensicht weiter an Boden verloren. Relativ unverändert notierten währenddessen die Aktien der großen Minenkonzerne (TXGM) und der Goldpreis (GLD).

Excelsior Mining Corp. Mr. Washnock will work with Excelsior’s management team to help plan and organize all aspects of the Gunnison Copper Project, including mine design, procurement, construction, start-up and commissioning; he will also assist management with the care and maintenance operations at the Johnson Camp Mine (JCM). He has direct experience with in-situ copper recovery mining, and his hiring comes as Excelsior prepares for the anticipated commencement of commercial production in 2018.

Mr. Washnock brings a wealth of copper mining experience specific to all aspects of mine production management. He has extensive expertise in the areas of solvent extraction electrowinning (SX-EW) plant operations, electrorefining, electro-metallurgy/chemistry, copper leach kinetics and environmental regulatory compliance. The vast majority of his 40-year career has centered on SX-EW copper recovery projects in Arizona.

Mr. Washnock has held managerial positions with Freeport McMoRan Mining Company since 2008. Most recently, he was the Manager of Leach Optimization at the Safford Technology Center, with primary emphasis on the Safford Mine and Morenci Mine leach operations. From 2009 to 2012, he was the Manager of the Hydrometallurgical Division at Freeport McMoRan’s Bagdad SX-EW facilities, where he was responsible for the production of high-grade copper cathode. From 2008-2009 he was responsible for high-grade cathode production at Freeport McMoRan’s Tyrone Operations. As General Manager for the Lisbon Valley Mining Company, from 2004-2008, he successfully developed, designed, constructed and started-up a greenfields SX-EW copper operation. From 1996 to 2004 he was the SX-EW Operations Manager for the Silver Bell Solvent Extraction Electrowinning Project.

From 1991 to 1994 he was the Manager of Leaching & SX-EW Operations for Magma Copper Company’s Pinto Valley Mining Division. In this role he was responsible for the production of high-grade cathode, including copper recovery from in-situ leaching operations.

Kupfer-Explorer Desert Star beginnt Bohrprogramm im Top-Minenbezirk von Arizona

Wie erwartet startet Explorer Desert Star Resources das erste Bohrprogramm auf dem aussichtsreichen Copper King Kupfer-Projekt in Arizona.

Desert Star's Kupfer-Liegenschaften liegen nur wenige Kilometer vom Weltklasse Resolution-Projekt (BHP und Rio Tinto) entfernt und befinden sich ebenfalls in einem renommierten Kupfer-Minenbezirk (siehe Map unten).

Zunächst startet Desert Star auf Copper King mit einem Diamanten-Bohrprogramm, das einen Umfang von 2.100 Metern haben wird. Im Fokus des ersten Bohrprogramms steht die Entdeckung eines Porphyr-Bereiches, der wie so oft auf bedeutende Kupfer-Mineralisierungen hindeutet.

CEO Vince Sorace erläuterte mir in einem Gespräch in Vancouver, dass Desert Star's Geologen-Team umfangreiche Arbeit geleistet hat, um die attraktivsten Bohrziele zu identifizieren. Das Team kann weitreichende Erfahrungen und einen erfolgreichen Track-Rekord bei dieser Art von Kupfer-Entdeckungen vorweisen.

Läuft alles nach Plan, dann wird der Kupfer-Explorer im März die ersten Bohrresultate vorlegen können..

Desert Star Commences Drilling at Copper King

Vancouver, B.C., February 1, 2016. Desert Star Resources Ltd. (TSX-V: DSR) (“Desert Star” or the “Company”) is pleased to announce that it has commenced drilling at its Copper King project in the Superior district of Pinal County, Arizona. Desert Star is conducting a diamond drill program (approximately 2100 meters) targeting a significant porphyry-style alteration footprint that coincides with historic copper workings and an IP geophysical anomaly, approximately 5km from the Resolution Copper Project (Fig. 1).

Copper King is situated in a prolific, high-grade copper camp, and the drill target is characterized by local high-temperature alteration of porphyry dikes and diabase intrusions, in addition to evidence of telescoping, similar to that documented at other deposits in the district. The Copper King project is underlain by favorable host rocks and has no post mineral cover (as at the Resolution Copper Project), as porphyry-style alteration exists at surface. Copper King Exploration Highlights

Field work conducted by Desert Star Resources at the Copper King Project has consisted of 1:5000 scale geological mapping, clay alteration studies (short wave infrared measured by Terraspec), and a 3D Volterra IP study by SJ Geophysics. This work has defined a 4 x 5 kilometer anomaly that is prospective for porphyry copper mineralization, located approximately 5 kilometers away from the Resolution Copper Deposit. High grade copper is found in small-scale historic workings on the property, and geological mapping and sampling have accurately mapped the distribution of diabase, limestone/marble and quartz diorite units which are favorable host rocks, and have the capacity to host high-grade copper mineralization. 

The Copper King footprint contains a large volume of quartz-sericite-pyrite (QSP) and marble-serpentine-calc-silicate altered rocks with smaller internal zones of secondary biotite, silica and tremolite, all of which can occur above and lateral to copper mineralization in porphyry systems. Copper King is cored by a large IP anomaly consisting of a coincident chargeability high/resistivity low measuring 1.3 x 1.1 kilometers. This response is consistent with the expected response from disseminated sulphides associated with porphyry copper mineralization.

Nach einer langen Wartezeit, auf die Kupfer-Junior Desert Star Resources (TSX-V:DSR) keinen Einfluss hatte, gab es jetzt endlich positive News von den Behörden.

Wie der Kupfer-Explorer vor kurzer Zeit mitteilte, wurde von der zuständigen Permitting-Behörde (U.S. Forest Service) grünes Licht für die erste Bohrkampagne gegeben. Mit der ausgestellten Drilling-Genehmigung ist es Desert Star nun erlaubt, an 10 Bohrzielen auf dem attraktiven Copper King Projekt in Arizona aktiv zu werden.

Copper King befindet sich in erstklassiger Lokalisierung in einem aktiven Minenbezirk, u.a. unweit vom Weltklasse Resolution Kupferprojekt entfernt, das von den Branchengiganten BHP Billiton und Rio Tinto zusammen entwickelt wird.

Für das erste detaillierte Bohrprogramm auf den Liegenschaften von Copper King in Arizona benötigt Desert Star noch eine entscheidende Genehmigung. Der Ball liegt weiterhin bei den Behörden und die Juniorfirma hat leider keinen Einfluss auf die Dauer des Permitting Prozesses. Durch meinen letzten Austausch mit CEO Vince Sorace konnte ich erfahren, dass die Finalisierung der Bohrgenehmigung läuft und demnach in absehbarer Zeit endlich Neuigkeiten erwarten zu sind.

Desert Star's Copper King Projekt gilt als sehr aussichtsreiches Kupfer-Asset, welches in der direkten Nachbarschaft von zahlreichen Weltklasse Kupferminen vorzufinden ist. In dem etablierten und aktiven Mining-Trend im Kupferminen-Staat Nr. 1 der Vereinigten Staaten sind u.a. die großen Kupfer-Majors wie BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto und Freeport mit bedeutenden Projekten vertreten.

Copper King liegt dabei im prognostizierten Mineral-Trend nordwestlich von BHP's und Rio's bedeutendem Resolution-Projekt entfernt, wodurch sich das Potential dieser attraktiven Explorationsclaims signifikant erhöht. Ivanhoe Mines and Zijin Mining Group set to complete Zijin’s investment in the Kamoa Copper Project

HONG KONG – Robert Friedland, Executive Chairman of Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: IVN), and Chen Jinghe, Chairman of Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd., jointly announced today that Ivanhoe and Zijin have agreed to complete Zijin’s investment in Ivanhoe’s Kamoa Copper Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo on or before December 8, 2015.

Zijin agreed in May this year to acquire, through a subsidiary company, a 49.5% interest in Kamoa Holding Limited for an aggregate consideration of US$412 million. Kamoa Holding is an Ivanhoe Mines subsidiary that owns the company’s interest in the Kamoa Project. Ivanhoe also has agreed to sell 1% of its share interest in Kamoa Holding to Crystal River Global Limited. Details of the transaction are contained in the news release issued by Ivanhoe Mines on May 26, 2015.

Mr. Friedland said that constructive and cordial negotiations between Ivanhoe Mines, Zijin and senior DRC government officials in recent weeks have established an agreed course of action to develop the Kamoa Project.

“Ivanhoe and Zijin, together with Crystal River, have confirmed that all conditions to completion have been satisfied or waived and that the investment will be completed on or before December 8, 2015, in Hong Kong. Zijin is one of the world’s most accomplished miners and the conclusion of this transaction is a major step toward the realization of significant benefits for all of the stakeholders of Ivanhoe and Zijin, as well as for the Congolese people,” Mr. Friedland added..

Hatte gestern noch einen weiteren, kurzen Austausch mit Vince Sorace, CEO und Präsident von Desert Star Resources (TSX-V:DSR). Desert Star sollte in naher Zukunft weitere News zum herausfordernden Permitting-Prozess verkünden und wird dann in meinen Augen einen verlässlicheren Fahrplan vorlegen können. Vermutlich bis spätestens nach der Sommerpause.

Nach wie vor hängt der Ball bzgl. den Bohr-Genehmigungen für die Kupfer-Projekte Copper King und Red Top, die sich in der direkten Nachbarschaft von zahlreichen großen Kupferminen befinden (BHP, Rio Tinto, Freeport), bei den Behörden. Desert Star hat daher nachvollziehbar kaum Einfluss auf die Dauer des Genehmigungs-Prozesses. Dennoch "Fingers crossed", damit der aussichtsreiche Kupfer-Junior an der Explorations-Front hoffentlich bald Gas geben kann!

Hydrology Pump Tests Confirm Favourable Conditions for In-situ Operations

Excelsior Mining Corp. (TSX-V: MIN) (Frankfurt: 3XS) (OTCQX: EXMGF) ("Excelsior" or the “Company”) is pleased to announce comprehensive hydrological results for the Gunnison Copper Project in Arizona (“Gunnison Project”). The results generated hydrological conductivities in the range expected for typical fracture controlled deposits and show the deposit is suitable for in-situ recovery (“ISR”) operations. These results will be incorporated into a full Feasibility Study scheduled for completion in 2016.

Commenting on these results, President and CEO Stephen Twyerould said, “The successful completion of the hydrology test program is a major milestone in the advancement of our Gunnison Copper Project. The favourable results once again demonstrate the potential to extract this significant deposit using economically superior and environmentally friendly in-situ mining.”

A total of 32 hydrology wells were laid out over the North Star deposit of the Gunnison Project and its surroundings. These wells targeted a variety of fractured zones, rock types and mineralized areas. Twenty-seven of the 32 wells were hydraulically tested and the remaining five served as observation wells. An additional 21 core holes from previous drilling programs were used as water level observations to provide a radial distribution of observation bores to each of the tested wells..

AGREEMENT EXTENSIONS AND CORPORATE UPDATE

Desert Star Resources Ltd. and Eurasian Minerals Inc. have signed amendment agreements for both the Red Top and Copper King projects, by which the parties have agreed to extend the time by which Desert Star is required to incur exploration expenditures and make AMR payments under the Sept. 13, 2013, option agreements, as amended. 

The exploration expenditure requirements and AMR payments that were required to be completed and paid by the second anniversary date of the option agreements are now due six months following the parties' receipt of written approval from the U.S. Forest Service regarding permitting for drilling of the projects. Each of the third and subsequent anniversary expenditure requirements and AMR payments due under the option agreements (as disclosed in Desert Star's Sept. 4, 2013, news release) will now fall annually on the anniversary of the new expenditure date.

Desert Star and Eurasian Minerals continue to work diligently with the U.S. Forest Service toward the issuance of the drill permits for the Red Top and Copper King projects.

We are fully prepared to quickly mobilize and commence drilling once permits are received, as our drill contractor has been selected, and base of operations and drill core facilities have been secured," stated Vince Sorace, president and chief executive officer of Desert Star..

The company will also be extending the maturity date of $495,000 of convertible notes from Sept. 9, 2015, for one year to Sept. 9, 2016, as agreed between the company and the holders of the notes. The conversion terms and interest rate will remain the same as disclosed in the company's Sept. 9, 2014, news release. The extension of the maturity date and underlying convertible securities is subject to the approval of the TSX Venture Exchange.

Metallurgical Fracture Simulation Tests Validate Prefeasibility Results

Excelsior Mining Corp. (TSX-V: MIN) (Frankfurt: 3XS) (OTCQX: EXMGF) ("Excelsior" or the “Company”) is pleased to announce final metallurgical results for the Gunnison Copper Project in Arizona. These comprehensive results will be incorporated into a full Feasibility Study scheduled for completion in 2016.

The final results from ten fracture simulation box tests can be found in Table 1 below. Results indicate that copper leaches rapidly and relatively uniformly across all rock types.

Forward modelling of the recovery time curves and acid consumption curves (see graphs) indicate average acid consumption at 100% acid soluble copper recovery (approximately 70% total copper recovery), would be in the range of 8 to 10 pounds of acid consumed for every pound of copper cathode produced. This is consistent with the previously reported Prefeasibility Study that used approximately 8.1 pounds of acid consumed for every pound of copper cathode produced.

Commenting on these results, Stephen Twyerould, President and C.E.O. said, “These results are completely in-line with the results from our 2014 Prefeasibility Study and fully support the industry leading economics that define our Gunnison Copper Project. Nach starkem China-Deal voll auf Kurs: Interview mit dem Managing Director von Kupfer-Developer Altona Mining

Developer Altona Mining (ASX:AOH) hat es erneut geschafft. Die erfolgreiche Junior-Firma erzielte zuletzt einen beeindruckenden Deal mit einem bedeutenden, chinesischen Konsortium.

Altona's großes Kupfer-/Gold-Projekt Cloncurry (> 1.400km²), welches sich in Queensland befindet, wird nun zusammen mit der kapitalstarken und einflussreichen Sichuan Railway Investment Group ("SRIG") in einem Joint-Venture Richtung kommerzielle Kupfer-Produktion entwickelt.

Altona erhält somit einen erstklassigen Projekt-Partner für das Flaggschiff Clongurry, der das aussichtsreiche Asset kräftig vorantreiben kann - und wird. Vor ein paar Tagen hatte ich die Möglichkeit mit Dr. Alistair Cowden (Managing Director bei Altona) im Rahmen einer Europa-Roadshow von der Swiss Resource Capital AG zusammenzukommen.

Folgend ein paar kurze Statements zu meinem Gespräch mit Mr. Cowden, der einer der erfolgreichsten Manager in der australischen Junior-Minenbranche ist:

• "Game Changer" Deal und bereits der zweite, sehr signifikante Deal (vgl. profitabler Goldminen-Verkauf in Finnland), den Altona in einer der schwierigsten Marktphasen im Minensektor erreichte.
• Großartiges Kommitment und Vertrauen von SRIG in Altona's Flaggschiff-Asset.
• Altona's Clongurry ist eine der wenigen Kupfer-Projekt weltweit, die in der aktuellen Marktphase ein starkes Interesse erhalten. Hauptgrund natürlich: Nur wenige, neue Kupfer-Vorkommen, welche sich im Entwicklungs-Stadium befinden, machen beim aktuellen Kupferpreis richtig Sinn und können eine solide Rendite generieren.
• SRIG commited sich für Investitionen in Höhe von 214 Mio. US-Dollar in die Projekt-Entwicklung von Clongurry. Im Hinblick auf Altona's Börsenwert und die Marktsituation sind das definitiv herausragende Investitionen.
• "Keine Aufnahme von Schulden notwendig" stellt ein sehr großes Privileg für Altona dar.
• Das von SRIG bereitgestelltes Kapital wird nach den Prognosen (siehe finale Wirtschatflichkeits-Studie) ausreichen, um Clongurry's "Little Eva" Lagerstätte in die kommerzielle Produktion zu bringen.
• JV-Terms: SRIG erhält ein 60%iges Interesse, Altona wird 40% kontrollieren. Im Hinblick auf die bedeutende Investitions-Menge und die Marktlage sind das absolut starke Konditionen, die Altona hier herausholen konnte. Das Management hat hart an diesen Terms gearbeitet.
• Altona verfügt weiterhin über starke, strategische Aktionäre und Story-Unterstützer.
• Cowden ist für die mittel- bis längerfristige Entwicklung im Kupfer-Sektor sehr optimistisch und sieht den schwerwiegenden "Schweine-Zyklus" im Kupfermarkt, der die meisten Rohstoff-Sektoren enorm belastet, im letzten Kapitel angelangt.
• Cowden sieht eine weiche Landung der chinesischen Wirtschaft kommen.
• Altona's MD sieht den Kupfermarkt im Hinblick auf die Angebotsseite auch in einem wesentlich besseren Umfeld als bspw. die Situation bei Eisenerz, Kohle und Gold. Nach Cowden werden wir mittelfristig ein Angebots-Defizit im Kupfermarkt sehen.
• Cowden: "Wir benötigen mindestens einen Kupferpreis von 3,25 USD pro Pfund, damit die meisten, noch nicht ausgebeuteten Kupfervorkommen, überhaupt eine Chance haben, signifikant Richtung kommerzieller Produktion voranzuschreiten.Wohl dem, der über besonders wettbewerbsstarke Kupfer-Projekte verfügt, die auch in diesem Preisumfeld funktionieren."
• Viele der größten Kupferminen weltweit (vgl. Escondida) können sehr schwierig ersetzt werden. Dies wird den Druck auf die Angebotsseite in der Zukunft kontinuierlich erhöhen.
• Urbanisierung, Infrastruktur-Investitionen, Weltbevölkerungs-Wachstum und technologische Innovationen werden dafür sorgen, dass die Kupfernachfrage weiter stabil zulegen wird.
• China ist de facto der einzige, mächtige Spieler weltweit, der aktuell im großen Stil antizyklisch im Rohstoff- und Minensektor investiert. Dieser Trend wird sich nach Cowden noch beschleunigen.
