Neues Interview mit Branchenguru und Sprott-Chef Rick Rule

Lesenswerter Bericht - credit to CEO.CA:

What Rick Rule learned after making 'egregious' early investing mistakes

Rick Rule says investors should be buying gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

"Many of our clients are still underweight physical precious metals," said Rule, President and CEO Sprott U.S. Holdings, in an interview with Andrew Nelson.

"We are urging those clients to position themselves either in the physical precious metals themselves or preferably in the 3 Sprott Physical Precious Metal Trusts, the gold, silver, and platinum & palladium trusts."

Interview edited for clarity.

Andrew Nelson: Being a legend amongst resource financiers what have you done throughout your career to create phenomenal returns for yourself and people who have invested with you?

Rick Rule: The first thing I’ll say was that I made an egregious mistake in my youth. In the bull market of the 1970s I did not know that natural resources were cyclical. I forgot that a bull market is the author of a bear market. What happened after I made that initial mistake was that the pain of that mistake was so fresh for me for the next 4 years that I understood I had to be a contrarian or that I would become a victim. Understanding the capital intensive cyclical nature of natural resources is essential in achieving success in this sector..

Palisade Radio, Latest Interview with Rick Rule: "I Am Too Wise To Call A Bottom In Mining"

Neue Einblicke von Sprott's Rick Rule:

Rick Rule: I Am Too Wise To Call A Bottom In Mining

10/25/2015 | Palisade Radio | Featured

Is the bottom in? Rick has seen too many cycles to answer a question like that. Despite the many claims, truth is, nobody knows yet. But his previous call for a potential capitulation in October is likely off the table.

Mr. Rule has dedicated his entire adult life to many aspects of natural resources securities investing. In addition, to the knowledge and experience gained in a long, successful and focused career, he has a worldwide network of contacts in the natural resource and finance worlds. As Chairman of Sprott US Holdings, Mr. Rule leads a team of earth science and finance professionals who are experienced with resource investment management.

Talking points of this week’s interview –
• Is there more upside or downside?
• How a US dollar rally will impact the latest rally in miners?
• What type of move off the bottom is indicative of a bull market?
• Silver or gold as a speculation?
• An update on the Sprott offer for Central Gold Trust.

Sprott Asset Management wendet sich vom Rohstoffmarkt ab: Zeichen für einen psychologischen Wendepunkt?

Spannende Entwicklungen @ Sprott.

Sprott Asset Management shifts from resources as bear market drags on

CALGARY - Sprott Asset Management, the Canadian investment firm best known for precious metals, doesn't want to solely be known for precious metals anymore.
The protracted bear market for commodities has forced the fund to diversify its investments and shift focus away from the resource sector, where it profited so substantially during the bull market of the 2000s.
Company chief executive John Wilson, who was brought on in 2012 to help lead the shift, says more than 80 per cent of the company's actively managed business in not related to resources at all today, compared with only around a quarter in 2012.
In an interview, Wilson said that Sprott actually started as a small-cap investment firm and saw big gains on non-resource plays like Tazer International, but the commodity bull market pushed the firm more into resources.
"The firm grew incredibly quickly through there and grew this reputation as a resource manager, but at its core that's not necessarily what it was about, it's just that's what worked, and that's what people wanted to put money in."
But the resource reputation has stuck, helped in part by founder Eric Sprott's affinity for gold, and Wilson said that the company determined from a recent survey that 70 per cent of Canadian fund managers still think of Sprott as only focused on gold and resources.
And so Sprott Asset Management, the biggest component of the Sprott Inc. (TSX:SII) public company, is now in the middle of a cross-Canada tour and advertising campaign to change the perception that it's only about resources as the bear market for commodities continues for a fourth year.
Wilson said precious metals, mining, and energy have "all been hit incredibly hard," and he doesn't see a turnaround soon as the fast growth in emerging markets that drove the commodity boom shows a lot of stress.
"Those growth rates are clearly decelerating pretty rapidly, and so over the near term, it doesn't look particularly compelling, and the price action is telling that," said Wilson.
As the commodity cycle wound down, Sprott Asset Management started shifting into new areas of investment and is now more involved in fixed income, blue-chip equity investments, and real asset investing outside of resources.
But despite the diversification, Sprott is still a big name in precious metals, in part as a major player in physical gold investments.
And Sprott Asset Management is currently pursuing a hostile takeover of Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion Trust to increase its stake in the physical gold business.
If the company is successful in its all-share US$898 million offer, the firm plans to merge the two businesses with its own precious metals holding companies, the Sprott Physical Gold and Silver Trusts.
Wilson said he thinks Sprott can do a better job of managing Central GoldTrust and Silver Bullion Trust.
"Sometimes when you're the biggest in an asset class, and in precious metals we are, it is incumbent on you to clean up the space," said Wilson.
The deal is anything but certain, with Sprott already extending the deadline for its offer twice, the latest of which ends on Friday.

A Recovery "Is Going to Happen" -- Rick Rule at the Sprott-Stansberry Symposium

By Henry Bonner (hbonner@sprottglobal.com)

Is this what a market turn feels like?

“Great opportunities in natural resources occur once per decade,” Rick Rule explained at the Symposium. “They occur at the bottom of a ‘bear market.’

“And this ‘bear market’ is the most severe that I have seen since the mid 1980's. That suggests a very dramatic recovery.”

Despite a down market, our Natural Resource Symposium garnered big numbers. Around 800 people showed, including attendees, exhibitors, and speakers.

The audience was far from gloomy too. In previous years, and at other conferences, attendees have lamented a poor sector. Not here.

From speakers and attendees alike, we saw optimism for natural resources. Some were on the sidelines, waiting for more bottoming for their chance to get in. Others were heavily invested already.

Where are gold and other natural resources headed now?

Speakers were divided. Some believed that a bottom was in, or at least that the sector was cheap enough today.

Others favored sitting it out for now, waiting for a recovery to “announce itself.”

Sprott US Chairman Rick Rule hasn’t given up on natural resources. “A recovery is inevitable,” he said.

Rick revealed that he was still holding “lots of cash” to prepare for future buying opportunities during a major dip.

Agora founder and self-proclaimed “rogue economist” Bill Bonner advocated for owning gold regardless of the price. We’ve been living in a “zombie boom” for the last 40 years, he told the audience. During that time, the “takers” and cronies have gained increasing control over the US economy.

The economy has managed to grow anyway, sparing regular folks too much pain, thanks to the bull market in bonds that has occurred over the same timeframe. But this can’t last forever. As he wrote in Financial Reckoning Day and Empire of Debt, a collapse will occur eventually. “You’ll want to own gold as insurance for your portfolio,” he says.

Steve Sjuggerud of Stansberry’s True Wealth has a more upbeat take on the zombie boom: It will go on for a few more years, so you can still make money in stocks and real-estate.

He wasn’t ready to make a major play in natural resources, he said. “They’re cheap, they’re hated, but I still want to see an uptrend.”

After he sees an uptrend in resource stocks, Steve will be ready to make a big play in the sector.
Eric Sprott was one of the most-awaited speakers at the conference.

Contrary to other speakers waiting for signs of a turnaround, he isn’t holding back. He told the audience that he’d personally taken ownership of a gold mine, along with other big investments in the sector.

Other big-name speakers included Robert Friedland, Chairman of Ivanhoe Mines. He told the audience they’d be crazy to miss this opportunity.

Copper, zinc, platinum, palladium – these metals are priced for the “end of the world,” as he put it, saying China in particular will be a big consumer of these metals. You need copper for electrical grids, platinum and palladium to purify motor exhaust, and zinc as a crop fertilizer. These are all areas where China may have a need for the metals.

“The mining sector cuts are not just skin deep, they are to the bone,” he said. Miners can’t afford to produce if metals prices go any lower, so if they drop from here, it means the world doesn’t want a supply of these metals, according to Robert.

Even Doug Casey said he was getting heavily into resource stocks now – despite his speech title, Mining Is a Dying, Stupid […] Business.

Did the speakers give any specifics about where they’re looking?

Dan Ferris of Stansberry’s Extreme Value gave his “top pick of the year,” Altius Minerals, a royalty company. The company gets a small cut of many different mining operations’ revenues.

Frank Trotter, co-founder of EverBank told attendees to take a look at “metals-backed CDs.” According to Frank, these can increase in value with metals prices, but contain minimal downside risk.

Of course, the conference also featured over 50 resource companies. As Rick explained, he expects at least some of the companies that were at the Symposium to become high-performers in the next up-move.

Some of the most well-followed names were Kaminak Gold, presented by Eira Thomas, Uranium Energy with Amir Adnani, and Sprott Resource Corp, represented by Steve Yuzpe.

Miles Thompson presented Reservoir Minerals and William Lamb presented the Lundin Group.
Dev Randhawa was also there, representing Fission Uranium and Randy Smallwood presented for Silver Wheaton.

David Harquail told attendees to consider Franco-Nevada, the world’s largest royalty company, as an alternative to a gold ETF. Franco-Nevada offers diversification because it has so many separate royalty contracts, he argued.

The resource sector is cheap right now, but it could offer great rewards to investors who are willing to participate.

As Rick Rule put it, the companies in the sector face a bad reputation. But investors forget that some hard-working, ethical, and talented people are doing “real work.” And the price of participating in their projects, as investors, has often dropped dramatically.

“We’ve had a whole lot of fun at this conference,” Rick concluded, “and we’re going to do it all again next year.”

CATEGORY CASEY RESEARCH,
Plenty of newsletters writers have been calling the bottom in junior mining shares for the past four years as the shares themselves have gotten cheaper and cheaper, but that doesn’t mean the letter writers should give up on the practice. With each passing year the odds of a rebound become more likely.
I watched the Casey Research Going Vertical video event yesterday evening, which featured Casey video chief Jonathan Roth interview some legends of the junior mining game. Guests included Franco Nevada co-founder Pierre Lassonde, Sprott Global Chairman Rick Rule, Pretivm Resources CEO Bob Quartermain, and US Global Investors CEO Frank Holmes..

VRIC 2015: Jüngstes Interview mit Branchen-Guru Rick Rule

Hörenswert:

TSXV Not All Carnage and Wreckage: Rick Rule

Rick Rule, founder of Sprott Global Resource Investments, is a fixture at mining industry events, and Cambridge House International’s 2015 Vancouver Resource Investment Conference was no different. Held at the Vancouver Convention Center from January 18 to 19, it saw Rule sit on a number of panels and talks.
Despite his busy schedule, Rule was able to take a few minutes to speak with Resource Investing News about a variety of topics, including what global catalysts investors should be watching for in 2015, whether any juniors present opportunities and just what’s going on with the gold price.
Highlights include Rule’s thoughts on the economy. Though he noted that the US equity markets have been indicating for the last six months that a recovery is in place, he said he hasn’t seen that recovery. “If we actually have a recovery, if the equity markets are right, the resource markets will rip. The problem with resources has not been too much supply, it has been very weak, very, very, very tepid global demand. If we see a recovery, if the major equity markets are right and we see a genuine recovery … then the resource markets will rip,” he said.
He also commented on the TSXV, stating that about 20 percent of the companies on the exchange have a reason to exist. While that makes 80 percent of them superfluous, it also means that “within that 20 percent there are some truly outstanding companies … there are some superb people out there doing some superb work. And what’s great about a bear market is that these guys are on sale cheap. The best of the best goes on sale with the flotsam and jetsam.”
Rule concluded, “the idea that everything on the TSXV is carnage or wreckage, that there’s no quality, is idiotic..”
