Biggest Wave Yet of U.S. Oil Defaults Looms as Bust Intensifies
February 25, 2016 — 3:15 AM CET
In less than a month, the U.S. oil bust could claim two of its biggest victims yet.
Energy XXI Ltd. and SandRidge Energy Inc., oil and gas drillers with a combined $7.6 billion of debt, didn’t pay interest on their bonds last week. They have until the middle of next month to either pay the interest, work out a deal with their creditors or face a default that could tip them into bankruptcy.
If the two companies fail in March, it would be the biggest cluster of oil and gas defaults in a month since energy prices plunged in early 2015..

Produzent Potash Corp. kürzt Dividende zum ersten Mal seit 1989
Der historische Bärenmarkt im Rohstoff-Sektor sorgt für weitere Dividenden-Kürzungen bei den großen Produzenten..
Potash cuts dividend for first time since 1989 IPO as earnings slide
Jan 28 2016, 08:21 ET | About: Potash Corporation of Saska... (POT) | By: Carl Surran, SA News Editor
Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT) reporting weaker than expected Q4 earnings and cutting its quarterly dividend, hurt by weakening fertilizer prices.
POT is slashing its dividend payout by 34% Y/Y to $0.25/share from $0.38/share, the first cut since the company’s IPO in 1989.
"Weaker fertilizer prices late in the year reduced our earnings for the quarter, giving rise to a more cautious outlook for all three nutrients as we begin 2016," POT says.
POT says Q4 potash sales volumes fell 31% Y/Y, while its average realized potash price fell to $238/metric ton from $284 a year earlier; it sees 2016 potash sales volumes of 8.3M-9.1M metric tons.
Despite falling prices, POT sees global potash demand of 59M-62M metric tons in 2016, in-line with 2015; POT also produces nitrogen and phosphate.
POT issues downside earnings guidance for Q1, seeing EPS of $0.10-$0.20 vs. $0.29 analysts consensus estimate, and for FY 2016, expecting EPS of $0.90-$1.20 vs. $1.45 consensus..

Analysts doubt resilience of BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto dividends

Analysts doubt resilience of BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto dividends
IAN MCGUGAN - MINING REPORTER - The Globe and Mail - Published Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016
Two giants of the global mining industry, already beset by plummeting metal prices, now face a new challenge – preparing their shareholders for sharply lower dividends.
BHP Billiton Ltd. and Rio Tinto PLC have both said in the past that they are committed to the payouts, but most observers doubt that sticking to the dividends is practical in today’s bleak environment for commodity producers.
At their current share prices in London, BHP’s dividend works out to a yield of more than 14 per cent, while Rio’s is equivalent to a payout of nearly 10 per cent.
Those are remarkably high yields for companies with investment-grade credit ratings and reflect the degree to which the share prices of the two miners have faded since the height of the commodity boom. The losses show no signs of letting up: BHP’s stock declined 19 per cent in the first two weeks of this year, while Rio’s is off 17 per cent..

Rohstoff- und Minenbranche: The Dig - Wochen-Rückblick vom Haywood Mining Team

Haywood Weekly Dig: Canadian markets at 52-week lows as commodities capitulate further
Global markets continued to fall this week as the fall in commodity prices continued unabated. Both the TSX Composite and Venture Indices fell to 52-week lows on the back of continued falling oil prices, led by WTI crude which fell below the $30 per barrel level for the first time since 2003 as Iran prepared to export into a market already in oversupply.
While the TSX Composite Index approached the 12,000 level, finishing at 12,073 on Friday, the TSX Venture Index once again fell below the 500 level for the second time in one month to finish at 489. The loonie fell below the US$0.69 mark for the first time in 15 years. Miners were hammered during the week, with both the S&P/TSX Global Mining and Base Metals Indices hitting 52-week lows. The price of copper (↓3.6%) also fell to a 52-week low, crashing through the $2.00 per pound level to finish at $1.94 per pound, while nickel (↓2%), zinc (↓1.9%) and lead (↓1%) also lost ground, finishing at $3.79, $0.67 and $0.73 per pound.
In the midst of the global market rout, miners began releasing 2015 production results and guidance for 2016, with one diversified miner recording a $7.2 billion write-down (its largest ever) on its U.S. shale gas assets. Gold (↓1.4%) experienced a volatile week after piercing the $1.100 per ounce level last week; the yellow metal fell mid-week to as low as $1,071 per ounce during intra-day trading on Thursday before recovering to finish slightly lower for the week at $1,089 per ounce. Silver, platinum and palladium also lost ground, finishing at $13.93, $829 and $492 per ounce respectively. Finally, the UxC Broker Average Price (BAP) of uranium bucked the trend, finishing higher at $34.81 per pound.

Rio Tinto freezes all pay for 2016 as commodities rout bites

Rio Tinto (LON, ASX:RIO), the world’s second largest miner, has put a freeze on salaries for all employees, in a fresh attempt to weather tough market conditions marked by a continuing slump in commodities prices.
Expenses for travel and money spent on temporary workers will also be under the spotlight.
Chief executive Sam Walsh told employees that expenses for travel and money spent on temporary workers will also be under the spotlight.
