Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX)(TSX:ABX) ("Barrick" or "the company") today announced that it has formed a strategic partnership with leading Chinese mining company Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd ("Zijin").

As a first step, Zijin will acquire 50 percent of Barrick (Niugini) Limited ("BNL"), the company which owns 95 percent of and manages the Porgera Joint Venture gold mine in Papua New Guinea. Under terms of agreements signed in Xiamen, Zijin - through its subsidiary, Gold Mountains (H.K.) International Mining Company Limited - will buy a 49.5% share interest in Kamoa Holding Limited (Kamoa Holding), an Ivanhoe subsidiary that presently owns 95% of the Kamoa Project, for an aggregate consideration of US$412 million (approximately C$506 million).

The purchase price will be satisfied by an initial payment of US$206 million in cash upon the closing of the transaction, which is expected on or about July 31, 2015, and is subject to Zijin's receipt of approvals by the government of the People's Republic of China, and certain other customary closing conditions.

The agreements specify that the remaining US$206 million will be paid in five equal installments, payable every 3.5 months from closing and continuing through the remainder of 2015 and into 2016..

Gambling on One Last Drill Hole Won Sirius a $1.4 Billion Deal

Sleeping in a tent in Australia’s outback and burning cash on a fruitless hunt for nickel, Mark Bennett’s Sirius Resources NL funded one last gamble on a drill hole in an obscure corner of Western Australia.

Barrick Announces Agreement to Divest Cowal Mine

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - May 24, 2015) - Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX) (TSX:ABX) (Barrick or the "company") today announced it has reached an agreement to sell 100 percent of the Cowal mine in New South Wales, Australia to Evolution Mining for US$550 million in cash on closing.

China sets up largest gold fund

XI'AN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- A gold sector fund involving countries along the ancient Silk Road has been set up in northwest China's Xi'an City during an ongoing forum on investment and trade this weekend.

The fund, led by Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE), is expected to raise an estimated 100 billion yuan (16.1 billion U.S. Dollars) in three phases.

China is the world's largest gold producer, and also a major importer and consumer of gold. Among the 65 countries along the routes of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, there are numerous Asian countries identified as important reserve bases and consumers of gold.

About 60 countries have invested in the fund, which will in turn facilitate gold purchase for the central banks of member states to increase their holdings of the precious metal, according to the SGE.

"China does not have a big say in gold pricing because it accounts for a small share of international gold trade," said Tang Xisheng of the Industrial Fund Management Co. "Therefore, the Chinese government seeks to increase the influence of RMB in gold pricing by opening the domestic gold market to international investors."

According to Tang, the fund will invest in gold mining in countries along the Silk Road, which will increase exploration in countries such as Afghanistan and Kazakhstan..
