It's Official: Canada Has Sold All Of Its Gold Reserves
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 03/03/2016 09:04 -0500
One month ago, when looking at the latest Canadian official international reserves, we noticed something strange: Canada had sold nearly half of its gold reserves in one month. According to the February data, total Canadian gold reserves stood at 1.7 tonnes. That was just 0.1 per cent of the country’s total reserves, which also include foreign currency deposits and bonds.
As we noted, the decision to sell came from Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s office.
“Canada’s gold reserves belong to the Government of Canada, and are held under the name of the Minister of Finance,” explained a spokesperson for the Bank of Canada on Wednesday. “Decisions relative to gold holdings are taken by the Minister of Finance.”
Reached by Global News on Wednesday evening, a spokesperson for the finance department said the sale “was done in the normal course of business for the government. The decision to sell the gold was not tied to a specific gold price, and sales are being conducted over a long period and in a controlled manner.”
This latest sell-off is indeed part of a much longer-term pattern of moving away from gold as a government-held asset. According to economist Ian Lee of the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University, Ottawa has no real reason to keep its gold reserves other than adhering to tradition.
"Under the old system, (gold) backed up currencies,” Lee explained. “The U.S. dollar was tied to gold. One ounce was worth US$35. Then in 1971, for lots of reasons I won’t get into, Richard Nixon took the United States off the gold standard.”
Gold and dollars were interchangeable until that point, he said, but in the modern financial world, the metal is no longer considered a form of currency. “It is a precious metal, like silver … they can be sold like any asset.”
The amount of gold the Canadian government holds has therefore been falling steadily since the mid-1960s, when over 1,000 tonnes were kept tucked away. Half of those reserves were sold by 1985, and then almost all the rest were sold through the 1990s up to 2002.
By last year, Canada’s reserves were down to just three tonnes, and the latest sales have now halved that. At the current market rate, the value of 1.7 tonnes of gold comes in at just under CAD$100 million, barely a drop in the bucket when you consider the broader scope of federal finances.
According to Lee, there may soon come a time when Canada’s gold reserves are entirely a thing of the past. There are better assets to focus on, he argued, calling the government’s decision to dump gold “wise and astute.”
* * *
Lee was right, because fast forward one month when earlier today Canada's Department of Finance released its latest official international reserves and as of this moment it's official - Canada has fully "broken away with tradition" and has exactly zero gold left.
This is what it said:
The Government of Canada sold 21,851 ounces of gold coins for settlement in February. On February 29, gold holdings stood at 77 ounces. The valuation is based on the February 29, 2016, London p.m. fix of US$1,234.90 per ounce.
And now, Canada can focus on buying "better assets." As to whether "the government’s decision to dump gold was wise and astute", we'll check back on that at some point in the near future.

Gold: ETF-Käufe explodieren auf 6-Jahreshoch
Die Gold-ETFs erhalten seit Jahresstart massive Zuflüsse. Hierzu ein aktueller Bericht von Mining.com:
Gold price: ETF buying surges to 6-year high
In heavy volume, April gold futures in New York’s Comex market were last exchanging hands for $1,240.40 an ounce, down from a high of $1,254 shortly after data showed the services sector in the US against expectations plunging into deep contractionary mode and coming in at the lowest reading since October 2013. Services constitute more than three-quarters of the US economy.
Gold is experiencing one of its best starts to a year in decades. The metal is up 18% year to date thanks to safe haven buying as investors seek cover from turmoil on financial markets, worries over the economic outlook and the push by central banks around the world into unprecedented negative interest rate territory.

2016 brings more pain to U.S. shale companies as crude sinks
Pain is quickly growing more acute in the new year at beleaguered U.S. shale companies as a global supply glut sinks crude further to 11-year lows, putting added financial stress on the most heavily indebted..
"You've got oil that is down meaningfully in 2016, volumes are down, natural gas prices are low because of weather and there is very little in the way of hedging. Then you've got a lot of these companies that were very aggressively financed with debt," said Mark Hanson, oil analyst with Morningstar in Chicago. "It can get pretty ugly."

Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller Loads Up On Gold, Makes It His Largest Position For First Time Ever
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 08/16/2015 17:40 -0400
Over the past several years, one of the biggest critics of the Fed's ruinous monetary policy has been billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller, who in 2010 announced he would be shutting down his legendary Duquesne Capital Management, and convert it to a family office. Yet, despite his constant drumbeat of warnings that the period of ZIRP/QE/NIPR will end in tears, he had yet to put money where his mouth was (aside for a brief period in mid-2012 when we bought a lot of GLD calls, only to unwind the almost instantly).
This ended on June 30, when following Friday's filing by the Duquesne Family Office, we learned that as of the end of Q2, the largest position for Stanley Druckenmiller was none other than gold, following the purchase of 2.9 million shares of the GLD ETF shares. In other words, as of this moment, gold amount to over 20% of Druckenmiller's total holdings.
In a world in which starved for ideas alpha-chasers do anything and everything that billionaires report they did a month and a half ago, we wonder if this marks the end of the relentless liquidation in the GLD, which recently hit a multi-year low, as a result driving the price of paper gold to multi-year lows even as physical demand has approached record levels.
So with Druckenmiller now back and strapped in for the ride, we wonder which other prominent investor will promptly follow..?

Why Russia Is On A Gold Buying Spree
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/27/2015 15:51 -0400
According to central bank data, Russia's gold reserves rose to 40.1 million troy ounces as of May 1 compared with 39.8 million ounces a month earlier. Russia increased its gold holdings for many months in a row last year, as shown by central bank figures and represented in the chart below...
Several years ago, Kyle Bass gave the simplest bull case for gold:
"Buying gold is just buying a put against the idiocy of the political cycle. It's That Simple"
And since it is this same political cycle that is doing everything in its power to preserve what little credibility it has, and to avoid its naked idiocy from being revealed for all to see, it has done everything in its power to push the price of gold lower.
However, several entities refuse to be fooled by such "cheap" tricks. One is China, whose ravenous apetite for gold has been extensively discussed previously. The other is the Bank of Russia.

Gold may rise toward $2,000 in two years – Barrick CEO
Jamie Sokalsky thinks gold prices may retest previous highs and rise toward $2,000 an ounce within two or three years.
Author: Liezel Hill (Bloomberg) - Posted: Thursday , 06 Mar 2014
Barrick Gold Corp., the world’s largest producer of the metal, said gold prices may retest previous highs and rise toward $2,000 an ounce within two or three years.
The metal has probably reached its lows and could exceed $1,500 an ounce in the next year, Barrick Chief Executive Officer Jamie Sokalsky said in an interview in Toronto today. Gold fell 28 percent last year, the biggest annual decline since 1981. It has recovered some ground in 2014, rising 11 percent in New York trading.
“Ultimately we are going to see gold go back up and I think we could challenge the highs that we saw a couple of years ago,” Sokalsky said at a Bloomberg event. “Within two or three years, I wouldn’t be surprised to see gold back up towards $2,000.”
