The Big Guns Are Out: Soros, Rothschild Warn Of Brexit Doom; Osborne Threatens With "Suspending" Market

Just yesterday, we recounted the story of "Black Wednesday" when on September 16, 1992, the UK was forced out of the EU’s exchange-rate mechanism, or ERM, when the BOE tapped out and allowed the British pound to float freely, leading to 15% losses in the sterling. As we noted, this was George Soros' infamous trade which "broke the Bank of England" and made the Hungarian richer by over $1.5 bilion.

24 years later Soros is back, and this time he is warning against the kind of devaluation that made him a billionaire and which he believes will be unleashed by Brexit, when in a Guardian Op-Ed he wrote that U.K. voters are “grossly underestimating” the true costs of a vote to leave the EU, saying that there would be an "immediate and dramatic impact on financial markets, investment, prices and jobs."

He predicts that the pound would decline "precipitously", seeing a gargantuan drop of at least 15% and possibly >20% to below $1.15. Considering it has now become trendy for analysts to come up with ever "doomier" forecasts of just how low cable would plunge in case of Brexit, we are surprised Soros stopped there.

Here Soros makes the distinction how the collapse in cable would be different from the one that made him richer by saying thatthis devaluation wouldn’t be “healthy” like the one in 1992 because BOE wouldn’t cut rates, U.K. has large current account deficit and devaluation unlikely to improve manufacturing exports this time. Just don't tell that to the BOJ, which would gladly leave the EU - twice if it had to - if it meant a 20% devaluation.

Brexit would make some people very rich - but most voters considerably poorer”; “there are speculative forces in the, markets much bigger and more powerful" than the speculators that profited from the 1967 devaluation at Britain’s expense. "A vote to leave could see the week end with a Black Friday, and serious consequences for ordinary people.."

$3.5B Saskatchewan potash mine put on hold

Andrew Topf | November 22, 2015

Low potash prices have made the prospect of developing the Kronau potash mine in Saskatchewan uneconomic.

In a letter to the community of Kronau, located 28 kilometres northeast of Regina, Vale SA (NYSE:VALE) stated that it would wait until market conditions improve to construct the $3.5 billion solution potash mine. Vale Potash currently has about 30 people working on the project, mainly in Regina.

According to a project page on its website, Vale says the Kronau mine would produce 3 to 4 million tonnes of potash a year for a minelife of over 40 years. Construction would employ around 2,000 and once completed, the mine would create about 350 permanent positions.

However development of the mine was shelved once before, in 2012, and virtually no work has been done on the site.

Potash prices are in a multi-year slump, with producers of the fertilizer ingredient feeling the pain.

In October Canada’s Potash Corp. (TSX, NYSE:POT), the world's biggest fertilizer producer by market value, cut its full-year earnings forecast and said it expects to sell less potash in the year than expected due to weak demand and prices, as well as higher costs.

The Saskatchewan-based company saw its third quarter profit fall by 11%, as it also was hit by weak nitrogen prices and increased phosphate costs in the period..

CHART: Mining tide is turning

Frik Els | October 11, 2015

Over the past week crude oil prices have jumped 13%, platinum is up 8%, copper 4.8% and industrial metals 5.2% on average after double digit gains for zinc. Aluminum gained more than 5% over the week while benchmark iron ore price advanced by the same margin.

Even after including more modest advances for the agricultural sector (cocoa is the sole commodity that lost value) it's been the best week for commodities (as per the Bloomberg Commodity Index) since July 2012.

The change in sentiment was also in evidence on stock markets, with the sector's heavyweights rallying across the board. The world's number one miner BHP Billiton which also has significant exposure to oil markets jumped more than 14% for the week. Iron ore's top producers Rio Tinto and Vale soared with the Brazilian company adding one fifth to its value.

The raft of negative media headlines and the capitulation of some of the few remaining perma-bulls among the investment banks has now been followed up by dire warnings from the IMF and central bank regulators

A new note by Capital Economics argues that the "turn for commodities is nigh (if it hasn't already happened)".

Apart from supply cuts and expectations of a soft landing in China boosting prices in the sector, Julian Jessop, head of commodities research, believes investor "sentiment toward commodities had become too pessimistic and may now be bottoming out":

"Indeed, the raft of negative media headlines and the capitulation of some of the few remaining perma-bulls among the investment banks has now been followed up by dire warnings from the IMF and central bank regulators, which a cynic would say is a sure sign that the things are about to get better!"

Danish bank Saxo also sees a turnaround but warns in its Quarterly Outlook that investors should not expect a quick recovery in the sector:

"Prices tend to recover much more slowly from a supply-driven downturn than from a demand-induced drop as producers often try to make up for the shortfall in revenue by increasing production wherever possible."

Prices tend to recover much more slowly from a supply-driven downturn than from a demand-induced drop

While many analysts including those working for Goldman Sachs, UBS and others remain pessimistic about the outlook for metals and mining, Morgan Stanley last week made a definite switch to the bull camp.

The investment bank believes the worst may be over mining stocks that have seen valuations drop dramatically since the start of the year:

[Morgan Stanley analysts] see commodity prices rising 19% by 2017, adding this “would be a sharp reversal from the experience in the last 18 months.” Equities exposed to the sector, they said, will likely outperform.

“Emerging markets and China in particular remain key to commodities demand. In the next few months we expect the perception around this demand to improve. In particular the acceleration of financial and administrative stimulus policies in China in recent weeks should start to feed through in both actual activity levels and equity market expectations,” they wrote..

"2. SRG-Umfrage: Gold 38% Ja (-6) zu 47% Nein (+8), 15% (-2) unentsch., das Nein baut sich auf #CHvote #abst14 #goldinitiative"

Quote:

..Spekulationen laufen ins Leere

5 Things To Ponder: "Bear-ly" Extant

Lance Roberts - Friday, 12 September 2014

"It is a bad sign for the market when all the bears give up. If no-one is left to be converted, it usually means no-one is left to buy.” - Pater Tenebrarum

That quote got me thinking about the dearth of bearish views that are currently prevalent in the market. The chart below shows the monthly level of bearish outlooks according to the Investors Intelligence survey..

European Gold Forum 2014 - Denver Gold Group:

Notes from European Gold Forum 2014 - Winter

Discussion HERE specifically relating to Teranga Gold but also some general views.
(Paid site discussing more companies' European Gold forum Presentations HERE (early/mid May-14 articles)

Investors have become used to looking at outdated PEA / PFS studies with a view that gold prices have come down and development over-spends have proved costs have gone up.

This may be changing, though of course investors must always be wary of feasibility study, and especially PEA, assumptions.

The juniors which advanced most strongly in early 2014 and since pulled back are interesting to maintain on close watch for renewed strength. From Winter -

  • Emerging producers with a bent for expansion have been severely marked down.
  • the market is now pricing them as if the execution and cost overrun risk is extreme and the prospect for takeovers of these emerging deposits is nil
  • There are some very, very compelling execution lift (de-risking) situations
  • The gold optionality, or call premium, on these deposits is also virtually nil
  • Time and time again during this forum, presenters state that the feasibility studies used were often done several years ago and that costs have since come down.
  • Gold Standard Ventures, for example, indicated that drilling costs are down 50-60%
  • Typically, mine plans for the companies on which I am focused have been tweaked to be more scalable starting with smaller capex and simpler designs so as to avoid the high profile development hazards
  • The common quote is, “We have good flexibility,” and that it’s a “good time to build a scaleable mine” in terms of labor and material.

Buyout Mania Hits the Gold Market
The only easy day was yesterday,” say my Navy SEAL friends. Every day is different, of course. Still, a wave of business news hit the beach this week..

Is Goldcorp’s Osisko bid just the start of a gold M&A rush?
While not the first recent takeover bid in the gold space, Goldcorp’s offer for Osisko suggests that the bigger players may now feel the decline in the gold price is near its end and could prompt others to follow.

MRG Mining Survey Reveals only 9% of Mining Executives are Bullish on the Year Ahead
